WIND ENERGY

Wind energy is the type of energy that is extracted from the wind.
This type of energy is mostly collected by wind turbines placed in sufficiently windy areas, almost always on hill and mountain ridges, or in marine areas known as 'offshore'.
A wind turbine can be horizontal-axis or vertical-axis.
Horizontal-axis wind turbines consist of a 'tower' supporting a 'nacelle' inside which an electricity generator is housed. This generator is driven by means of a propeller rotated by the wind.
The 'blades' of the propeller can be either 'fixed pitch' or 'variable pitch'. In the latter case, the blades can also rotate around their longitudinal axis to harness the wind's energy with greater efficiency.
This type of wind turbine can also exceed 120 metres in height.
Vertical-axis wind turbines consist of a vertically positioned shaft to which blades are attached transverse to the wind direction.
Also in this case, the shaft, moved by the wind, rotates a generator of electricity.
